All Things Work In Progress

I have not given up on the blog and truly hope to catch up by the end of the year...yes, yes, this year not 2013. But, I wanted to take a moment to all who still may follow this and say...Merry Christmas from all of us to you and yours.

Hope the new year brings you much peace, lots of creativity and always good health.

All Things Pickle

Kata had to write about a Holiday Family Tradition. We have many, many traditions. But our very own was started with a Pickle Ornament I found at Tarjay.

I don't hang this ornament until late on Christmas Eve and the first kid to find it on Christmas morning gets to open their present first.

You can imagine the frenzy associated with the search. Here's a link to the origin of the tradition.

All Things Thankful

Love our traditions like Riggsby Blueberry pie for Thanksgiving. Can't let pumpkin pie be the runaway favorite. And family. We love having Baka and Djedo here to join us on this holiday and remind us of all the things that make us thankful this year.

All Things Oh No, Not Another Holiday Card Photo Session

It was a relatively mild early afternoon and I thought, ohdearIhavetogetthedarnfamilychristmascardphotodone. This year, I wanted to take the photo myself. So 214 shots later, here are the better ones...kinda.

When shooting three kids, you are almost always doomed because SOMEONE has to laugh...

Or make an awkward face...

Here's the card we sent out...the magic moment where all were looking at the camera at once and not grimacing. Well, almost not grimacing.

All Things Spooky Oooky.

Apparently our years of "What Disney princess would you like to be, sweetheart?" are gone. The girls are done with my favorite costumes of all time, and I'm absolutely heart-broken that NO ONE was Snow White. I had the perfect plans to create a deliciously wicked poison apple. *sighs*

Instead, I present to you...a Zombie Princess.

A Country Diva. Don't ask that's the description on the package and let's face it my girls inherited my love of All Things Sequined.

And Dr. Who, himself. Blurred because he's a Time Lord. Travelling right now; most likely not even here. Don't blink.

Alex carved the above pumpkin all by himself. Perhaps I can retire my carving knife? Soon, I'm sure.

All Things Father's Day Pizza Party.

Ah, the time for Father's Day Pizza party at preschool had arrived. While it's similar to the Mother's Day Tea Party, it's not. You see all these dads/grandfathers/uncles/godfathers show up on a weekday afternoon to eat pizza and watch a show put on by the very excited students.

Do you guys see Bella? Her excitement is well palatable, isn't it? Especially when she was all done singing and got to run up to her Daddy carrying that special gift.

This year, Ken got a rock. Okay, it's a functioning paperweight/rock. I'm sure it's representative of his role in Bella's life. He is her rock. I know my Father is mine, still to this day. My anchor. And Ken's the wind which propels me forward. Together these two men make me soar in a careful and positive direction.

Hoping that all the dads I know had a wonderful Father's Day and that it was filled with love and heartfelt moments.

All Things Mothers' Day Tea.

[Bella is in the middle and those are her teachers. How we luv them!]

This Spring is full of milestones for us and here's another one to add to our list: our last Mother's Day Tea at Sunflower Preschool. It's my very favorite event there perhaps because they ask only the Pre-Kers and their mothers, grandmothers, aunts or godmothers to attend.

Can you see all the frothy delights??

It's like a Faerie Tea, isn't it?

And then, all of the kids come out and sing these wonderful songs that make all the mommies weepy. Yes, every year, I get out the tissues.

When the kids are dismissed, they present you with these wonderful creations that they spent all week making. And it's well, see for yourself...it's a moment of tremendous pride for the child and for the mommy.

Here's to the end of one chapter and to many, many new beginnings.

Did you have a Spring Celebration that you enjoyed? Think about it for a moment. It was magical, wasn't it?

All Things Altar Boy.

When you're an Altar Boy in an Eastern Orthodox church, you get to pass out hundreds of dyed eggs on Easter Sunday. Hundreds. Did I mention that they're all dyed red??

Yes, it does come off, eventually. Love our traditions and how they're passed on down to new generations. Take a moment to think of your favorite family traditions. It's worth observing them, isn't it??

All Things Easter Bunny.

Egg dyeing, it's a Process in our family. And I have to admit that Ken coached the kids through it this year.

Note how, he was a Smart Daddy and used Alex's old baseball shirts?? That was due to the Red Dye Incident a few years ago, when he dropped a bowl of Greek Red Egg Dye which stains beyond permanently. They say the mark of a good man is his ability to learn from mistakes. See, I knew I picked a Good Man.

And then the next day, we attended Easter Service. Notice, how they're all dressed, coiffed and wind-blown? Our weather has been highly uncooperative this year. But it's been wonderful for special effects. I just asked Alex "to, please, put your arms around the girls..." and he did. Miracles do occur on Easter Sunday.

Bella made an Easter Bonnet at preschool. I loved her use of pink, blue and yellow. Watch out Paris, London and New York, you may have a new designer in your ranks one of these days.

The kids made Twilight eggs just for me. Edward was supposed to be "red" I was assured. So why is Jacob orange?? And in our Egg Cracking Game, Edward won. Just like in the books. I knew you'd want to know. I think Ken may have rigged that somehow.

And then look, a Spring Faerie showed up. The snowflakes on the right were just decals on the door but somehow, it makes the picture look more magical, doesn't it? I'm pretty sure the Spring Faeries would welcome this new addition into their court.

All Things Leprechaun Trap.

Kata's First Grade teacher gave the family a fabulous assignment : to build a Leprechaun Trap. Now, some of you have probably gone through this ritual. We haven't and we're so glad that with three kids, we are sure to hit every possible holiday celebration out there!

I started by googling "leprechaun trap". Who knew that this was quite the Thing To Do? We were informed that they like shiny things, rainbows, green, flowers and gold. So we hit my scrapbook stash. You all knew that collecting years of those supplies would come in handy one day, right?

We even added a little Leprechaun Friend. Hoping that if the real Leprechaun saw it, it would just hop in based on potential kinship. Well, who said a Mama's Logic isn't sometimes faulty?

Hope you had a wonderful St. Patrick's Day celebration. Or at least, you spent it on the couch watching what else? March Madness!

All Things These Are A Few of My Favorite Things.

I wanted to do one post for January, because our December was So Chock Full O' Stuff. And what better post than to focus on the one thing I despise about January. I'm sure you can guess. It's true, I hate the snow, the ice, the tediousness of school starting and then stopping so we can enjoy a plethora of Early Release Days.

But really, the thing that I Hate the Most is taking down all those Christmas decorations. I love when I hear of people leaving up their trees all year long. One day, I will be that person. I will also live alone, at that point, with one too many cats and way too many books. Wait, I'm almost there on the latter count.

But the ornaments I love the most are the ones that show our Christmas card pictures since the birth of Alex. Go on, look. It's the collage up above. Yeah, we've changed just a tad, eh??

Our other favorite ornament is this lovely Beauty and the Beast wooden heart. It's great because it plays the entire theme of "Beauty and the Beast" in a music box, high pitched, tinkly tone that used to make our cat pace and meow around the house. For the record, the dog, just ignores it.

But, the kids love to press it and for around four minutes we are treated to the slow, aggravating melody. There's no mechanism to stop it. And no, no battery. Groans can be heard from me and Ken with threats of "If you hit it again..." bouncing of the walls. Because if you do press the button again, it will, that's right, repeat. Yet, we hang it up each and every year because it was the first ornament I got when Ken and I started dating. I feel the "Awww Moment", don't you?

The Disney theme breaks here and there for kid inspired ornament art. Like my beloved Edward Cullen created by Alex just for his Mama and placed artistically by him next to Disney's Sleeping Princess. Because you see, Edward doesn't sleep. I realize that this only makes us giggle.

Sometimes, you get gifts from friends. When we adopted Becks, we received this lovely Bichon Frise ornament. The kids placed it next to the Prince Caspian ornament, lovingly created by a friend who knows me Entirely Too Well.

A certain friend will be surprised when she sees that I still have these ornaments that her Dad created out of McDonalds Toys. They are amongst our very favorites and represent Epcot's anniversary many years ago. Every year, the kids fight to see who will put them up.

This hand painted ornament arrived from my Writing Buddy. Isn't she talented? And not just in words.

So glad the process of Putting Away All the Stuff is done for another year and you know I'll be the first to squeal with delight when it comes time to put them out again this year. But for now, I am grateful that the picture below is a safely tucked away memory.

Wishing you a moment of perspective, no matter how grumpy.
